About the artwork
In Milton's Paradise Lost (1667), Pandemonium is the palace the fallen angels raise as their capital in Hell. John Martin (1789–1854) was famous for monumental, apocalyptic scenes, and had already illustrated Milton's poem in a celebrated series of mezzotints in the 1820s. In this oil painting from 1841, a lone armored figure, often read as Satan, stands on a rocky shore facing the vast, torch-lit palace while lightning cuts across a smoldering sky. The original is held at the Louvre in Paris.
