About the artwork
Egon Schiele (1890–1918) painted Harbor of Trieste in 1907, at just seventeen years old, the same year he met Gustav Klimt and began breaking away from the rigid teaching of the Vienna Academy. Trieste held personal meaning for him: it was where his parents had spent their honeymoon, and he visited more than once with his sister Gerti. In this small oil and pencil work on cardboard, Schiele experimented with unconventional technique, etching into the wet paint with a pencil or the reverse end of a brush to render the water's rippling reflections. The muted, earthy palette and free handling of the surface show the early stirrings of the boldly expressive style he'd become known for. The original is held in a private collection.
